10 Simple Things That Separated FE Exam Passers from Failers

1. They Treated the Handbook Like a Map

Passers didn’t try to memorize formulas. They relied on efficiently extracting formulas from the FE Handbook.

They practiced finding equations by keyword until it became muscle memory. When a question mentioned “moment of inertia” their hands moved to the right section before their brain finished reading.

One student told me: “Most questions include keywords that help you quickly find formulas in the handbook.”

Those who failed mistakenly thought they would “naturally” learn how to use the handbook while studying. That isn’t true. Navigating the FE Handbook efficiently is a skill that requires deliberate practice.


2. They Set a Hard Time Limit Per Question

On the real exam, they set a hard limit of three to four minutes maximum for each question.

If they couldn’t solve it in that timeframe, they flagged it, made their best guess, and moved on.

One of my students who passed on her fifth attempt said this was the biggest game changer for her: “This was the only time I finished the exam with 15 minutes left to review and the only time I passed.”

Those who failed described getting stuck on difficult questions in the first section instead of moving on. This inevitably burned their time and confidence, which ultimately affected their performance for the rest of the exam.

Goes to show that this exam isn’t just about knowledge. It’s about developing the discipline to accept your losses while strategically trusting a test-taking strategy that will confidently get you through all 110 questions.


3. They Did 1,000+ Problems (And Tracked It!)


Very often, those who pass tell me this: “I did close to 1,000 practice questions.” They didn’t say they studied “a lot.” They knew their exact problem count.

One student did 2,500 practice problems across four attempts before finally passing. Another completed 1,500 problems over three months. Another student went crazy and did 1,000 problems in two weeks before their successful fifth attempt.

The magic number hovers around 1,000 practice problems.

Those who failed often didn’t track their problem count. They said “I practiced a lot,” but that’s not the same as “I completed and reviewed 1,000 practice problems.”

So yeah, the threshold appears to be around 1,000 problems minimum for anyone more than a year out of school. If you can hit that number while making sure you’re solving these under focused, distraction-free, quality conditions, you will certainly be prepared for the real exam.


4. They Reviewed Every Wrong Answer

This is a big one. Those who passed didn’t just check their score and move on. They treated every missed problem as a learning opportunity.

One of my students described their process: “I looked through all the incorrect and correct answers and made sure I knew what I was doing. I took the practice exam again and got a 90%, but I put that off as memorization, not actually knowing the process.”

That’s what we call learner self-awareness. This student clearly understood the difference between recognizing the steps to do a problem and deeply understanding the process it takes to solve the problem. Learning the process takes serious self-reflection because that’s when you’re exposing your flaws and knowledge gaps. It feels uncomfortable at first, but the more you do it, the more you will begin to build deep, long-lasting connections which lead to real process-level learning.

And those who failed? They often moved through practice problems without deep review. They accumulated volume without accumulating deep process-level understanding.


5. They Took Timed Practice Exams

To this day, it still astounds me when a student doesn’t do any full-length exams and tells me “I don’t know why I failed.”

Passers simulated real exam conditions before exam day.

They gave themselves a weekend to do full-length exams to make sure they experienced the full time limit. They practiced the flag-and-skip rhythm by setting that three to four minute hard limit for each question. This is how they built their speed, pacing, and stamina for this long exam to make sure exam day didn’t feel too unfamiliar.

One student shared a critical detail that you must account for when doing timed practice: “There is no limit in which you have to finish the first section. I waited about 10 minutes before I realized I just wasted 10 minutes doing nothing.”

This serves as a reminder that you choose how long to allocate for each section. Account for this when doing your full-length simulated exams.

Those who failed often practiced problems untimed, then encountered time pressure for the first time during the actual exam. Some can adapt to this pressure, but it only makes sense to train your brain for it beforehand.


6. They Mastered Their Calculator

Passers didn’t just own a TI-36X Pro or the Casio FX-115 ES Plus. They practiced all the important, time-saving calculator functions that significantly slashed how long they spent solving specific questions on exam day.

One of my students who passed on their sixth attempt said: “I learned all your calculator tutorials and this helped me sooooo much with Calculus, Vectors, Probability/Statistics, and critical functions that I never knew the calculator could do.”

Those who failed had an approved calculator but never built fluency with it because they didn’t learn the time-saving functions that solve many FE problems in seconds. On exam day, they lost precious minutes fumbling through functions they’d never practiced.


7. They Finished with Time to Spare

To me, this is usually a big indicator that a student was well prepared. Those who passed often finished their exam 10 to 30 minutes early.

One student who did nearly 2,000 practice problems finished the first section in 1 hour and 50 minutes—almost an hour under the limit. Another finished the entire exam 30 minutes early. Another had 10 minutes left to review and said that was the first time they passed.

That extra time didn’t come from rushing. It came from speed through familiarity. When you’ve deeply understood a concept and applied it many times while solving problems, you’re wiring your brain to recognize it instantly. You know exactly where to find the formula in the handbook and then execute without hesitation.

Those who failed very often ran out of time. They left questions unanswered. And sometimes, they guessed on more than 20 questions.


8. They Saved the Last Two Weeks for Full Length Exams and Review Only

Passers stopped learning new material in the final week. Even if they didn’t complete everything assigned in a prep resource or course, they instinctively knew it was time to jump into full-length exams and do their final review.

One student credited this as the key difference between their failed attempts and their successful one: “The most important change was revising everything in the last week, which I did not do in previous attempts.”

The final week was for locking in what they already knew. Simulated practice. Quick reviews. Light refreshers. Mental warm-ups. Not cramming new concepts that wouldn’t stick anyway.

Those who failed often studied new material right up until exam day, which really didn’t get retained because it was too fresh while also mistakenly not reviewing concepts they learned in the past.


9. They Guessed Strategically (And Moved On)

Those who passed understood that they must stick to a guessing strategy. They accepted that guessing is part of the exam.

One student flagged 30 questions in the first section alone and still passed. Another guessed on 20 to 30 questions and “smart guessed” on another 10 to 15. They weren’t proud of it, but that didn’t throw them off course.

Remember, you need roughly 70 correct answers to pass. That means you can miss 30 to 40 questions and still succeed. Guessing on 15 to 20 isn’t failure—it’s strategy.

Those who failed let unknown questions degrade their confidence. They spent too long wrestling with problems they couldn’t solve, stealing time from problems they could.

Key Lesson: When encountering a tough problem that you don’t know, flag it, make an educated guess, and move on. You never know, you may come back to it and solve it after building your confidence by solving the problems you know.


10. They Changed Strategy After Each Failure

It’s completely normal to need multiple attempts to pass this exam. But those who needed multiple attempts didn’t just study harder. They studied differently.

One student who passed on their sixth attempt went back to learning concepts from college textbooks after their fifth failure. Another started timing themselves for the first time on their third attempt. Another finally committed to tracking their problem count.

They asked specific questions: What topics did I miss? Was it conceptual or calculation-based? Did I run out of time or not know the material? Did I do full-length practice exams?

Those who failed often repeated the same approach expecting different results. Or they asked vague questions like “Why didn’t I pass?” without diagnosing the specific breakdown.


The Bottom Line


This FE exam isn’t just testing knowledge. Think of this exam as a 50/50 test: 50% knowledge and 50% test-taking strategy. It’s not just about what you know. It’s testing your problem-solving under a strict time constraint while applying concepts you retained through plenty of deliberate, thorough preparation.

Those who passed built speed, stamina, and endurance through volume by tracking their problem count.

Those who failed studied content but didn’t deliberately build speed by tracking their problem count.

They both had access to the same quality resources but applied different habits which led to different outcomes.

If you’ve failed your FE exam before, don’t stress, it’s completely normal. What matters most now is refining your approach while building on what you already know. Change something specific and start tracking your problem count. Practice under timed conditions and make sure that you drill your FE Handbook navigation. And for sure, master your calculator!

You will pass this exam as long as your preparation strategy is on par with what the real FE exam demands.
