FE Exam Test Taking Strategy

Developing strong test-taking skills is essential for passing the FE exam. In fact, good test takers often succeed by meeting the minimal competency requirements for fundamental FE exam concepts while relying on effective test-taking strategies to navigate the rest of the exam successfully.

Here’s a simple strategy I learned from one of my students. Let’s call it the “Three-Pass Strategy.”

This method helps you manage time effectively and avoid getting stuck on difficult questions. Here’s how it works:

Pass 1️⃣: The Easy Points

Go through all the questions quickly.

If you can solve a question in under 1-2 minutes with confidence, answer it.

If a question requires longer calculations, skip it, even if you know how to solve it.

Calculator-based problems, ethics, and conceptual questions are usually quick wins.

Pass 2️⃣: The Calculations

Go back to the skipped questions from Pass 1.

Now, take your time solving problems that require longer calculations.

If you don’t know how to solve a question at all, skip it again.

Pass 3️⃣: The Guesswork

Now, tackle the remaining tough questions.

Use educated guesses, eliminate wrong answers, or plug in answer choices to see what works.

Don’t spend too much time. A best guess is better than leaving it blank.

Why does this work?

This strategy prevents you from wasting time on tough questions right from the start. You’re making sure to answer all the easy and medium questions first, reducing stress and anxiety while keeping a steady pace.

By following this method, you’ll maintain control over your time and give yourself the best chance to succeed.
